Autumn musings

October 22, 2006

Autumn is here. I think that Summer has finally given up the ghost here in Surrey mainly because I have had to carry a waterproof everywhere with me and I have had to dig out jumpers to wear in the house. Although I have yet to discover a cure for my poor cold nose.

I am always pushed to pick my favourite season. Each time the next one rolls around I am convinced that that one is my preference normally because I have grown thoroughly tired of the one that has just left.

I adore Spring because it means that the Winter is nearly over and because the bulbs start to sprout.

Summer is superb as I generally tend to return home to Spain and can bake myself by the pool and have at least a week of nothing but reading and being.

Winter is good because of Christmas, a time of family and joy. It’s present season as well, a January first birthday means that I am devoid of gifts for the rest of the year!

But Autumn, well Autumn is special. It is crisp and cool, my favourite clothing season by far. Big jumpers and chunky socks. Weekends spent under the duvet watching films. It is my season of indulgence. I haven’t yet succumbed to the depression that inevitably follows the dark days and the even darker nights, I haven’t yet grown of tired of scarves, hats and gloves and am still vaguely entranced with the idea of fluffy pyjamas and the thought of cold evenings spent huddled in bed with a book and my hot water bottle.

It is also the season of puddings! This here is rice pudding which I made as a surprise for G on Thursday after a stressful parents evening. It always makes me think of one of my Grandmothers. She used to make hers with evaporated milk though rather than ordinary milk which made it even creamier. I made it in on of the dishes that I collected from home this Summer. It used to be my Grandmother’s. There are two of this size which I have in England now and a flatter one and a jug still in Spain that I haven’t bought back yet. Cooking rice pudding in it brought back some good memories of her.

I did see a large casserole version of this dish at a car-boot sale in the Summer which I stupidly passed over the first time I saw it. I decided I couldn’t live without it and went back to get it and it had gone! Just goes to show that you can’t procrastinate and think at a car-boot, certainly learnt my lesson on that one! Although car-boots are now a thing of the past with the blustery weather.

So welcome Autumn, I look forward to making your acquaintance again, just try not to be too soggy!

Like where you are we have long cold seasons, and I do enjoy those socks and hehe “jumpers,” as you call them- I think that translates to sweatters… Love em’!
I hope your nose feels better, and I love that you have a hot water bottle. I need to get one, those are cool.
Oh and you MUST MUST MUST see MA!!! It was opulant, half the movie was all these desserts and dresses and you know Versailles is just so… Versailles.

Is the dish Corning Ware? I remember getting some from my Mother prior to one of her frequent moves, sadly it has now been broken, but only after many years of “yummy” service.

Yes, I love the chunky jumper weather. I don’t get to use my hot water bottle collection very much over here in South Carolina. Today it is crisp for the first time. I can feel a chill in the air which is nice. I enjoy your blog.

The casserole dish is Corning’s Cornflower pattern and is one of the more collectible patterns…yours is all the more special, because it has stayed in the family!

Autumn is my favourite too – you describe it so well – that cool crisp feeling… It has always been a season of renewal for me – something about starting a new year at school, I suppose. That lovely feeling of having new pencils and crayons and blank pages to fill. I still can’t help it – when those back to school offers come around I’m right there with the students, stocking up on notebooks and pencils – as if I need any more… ;-)
We got our first gale warning today though, I’m not sure I’m ready for that yet!
