Purpleness
There has been a colour theme to my weekend and so it seems my garden. I love and adore purple. When I was little I was all about pink, a proper girly Daddy’s girl. Then when I was older I discovered purple. Whilst I like lilac and mauve it is this deep dark purple that I love most of all. As a teenager I discovered a purple nail varnish so dark it was almost black and it is that nail varnish that these tulips reminded me of. The dark velvety softness. Gorgeous. Just wish I had grown more of them.
Then there were these.
Snakeshead Fritillary, it is quite strange to watch them appearing. They start as teardrops in a really dark colour and then the chess board quality of them starts to appear as the white develops and the purple fades away. I was really taken by the spines in the middle that hold the flowers open truly clever.
We were at a BBQ on Saturday evening and low and behold there was more purple in the guise of thick red onion marmalade, scrummy. No photos of that though as cameras are banned from gatherings! Which is probably for the best.
G has discovered the joys of the blender and so we have been enjoying smoothies day and night. I think this was blueberries and strawberries and it produced the same sort of purple goodness.
These astounded me. Besides the Queen of the Night tulip at the top I had bought a bag of mixed purple and white tulips and this is one of them. The fringing is adorable. So delicate and yet so sturdy. It’s my only one though. Which is a bit of a shame although having taking a better look at this photo maybe that is another one creeping up behind.
The first time I plant bulbs I always follow the instructions on the packets what with planting depth and distance and I am always vaguely disappointed when they come up that they seem so scattered. This year with the daffodils I ignored distance advice and chucked them all in together and I think next year I shall do the same with the tulips so that I can have huge swathes of plum magnificence swaying in the wind.
And with that I march onward to another week at work. At least G is back to school today though to share the misery!

I’m with you on the purple Gemma. A personal favourite here too.
Such stunning flowers. I think you’re enjoying spring!
I found that with bulbs too – I ignore the packet instructions now (except for the depth). I mass plant as closely clumped as I can and it’s much more effective.
Ooh, nice one, a purple parrot, how clever !!
Not being a purple person (red) I can at least understand a fondness for one colour (red) and appreciate the beautiful pictures of colourful flowers (red) that you have shown us. It’s lovely to read of how your passion for pink (red) changed into a passion for purple (red) as you grew older. The flowers are lovely! (but not red!)
“When I am old I will wear purple…” or something like that. Funny but I remember having nail varnish that colour as well! Your tulips look wonderful, I never manange to plan when it comes to bulbs, like so many people I only think “I wish I had some of those” when I see them in flower.
Lovely, beautiful, splendid. I adore your garden. SO happy you are on facebook, too!
((hugs))

Oh what beautiful flowers!
What a wonderful post. The colours you captured are fantastic. We often forget about the deeper colours to be found in the garden in favour of the pinks and greens.

Gorgeous photos. I love purple flowers. And that smoothie looks delicious and very healthy!
