Turning the corner

March 12, 2008

Wowzer, how on earth did that happen. I was certainly away a little longer then I intended to be. And once I’ve done something like that I find it hard to get back into the grove of blogging regularly so in an attempt to explain and get back on track this is a bit of a rubbish post with no pictures really.

I don’t think I’ve ever hidden the fact that I find this time of year terribly difficult. The dark and the cold do not make me feel at the top of my game and when you add to that the fact that I have pretty much been ill since October/November it makes for quite a depressed little Gemma.

It seems somewhat churlish to moan and groan about what amounts to little more than a sniffle and a cough when there are so many people with worse health problems than I, but it is so terribly wearing. That and nothing gets done, despondency sets in along with the dust and the mess in my house and before I know it I have taken to my bed and am asleep by nine o’clock every night. None of which helps with the supposed healthy eating plan and exercise regime I am supposed to be following.

Once upon a time I did used to be a fairly healthy young lady but the last few years have seen me catch every bug going and find it harder to shift than anyone else who seems to catch it and the last run of ill health has really pushed me to the end of my tether. When you go to the doctors and say I seem to have no immune system and they tell you there is nothing they can do and they just prescribe anti-biotics and bed rest and over the counter remedies means that I was beginning to feel as though I had nowhere to turn.

However, it is not all doom and gloom. I decided that if the conventional medical community couldn’t help then perhaps I ought to try something unconventional. I did a bit of research and I have decided upon homoeopathy. I have found a nice practitioner round the corner from me and my first visit was last week. I’m not going to go into the ins and outs of it. But I will say this. I feel better! Still a bit snuffly, but deffo better. I feel more positive, energy is coming back and I think that I possibly see a light at the end of the tunnel. So fingers crossed that this is the turning point. I so hope it is.

Oh brill, you’re back! Glad you found something that seems to be helping; winter is awful and I think loads of us suffer in teh same way – I was a bit better at handling the gloom this year but know how you feel xx

I used to be a bit skeptical about alternative medicine until a homeopath sorted out a problem that my GP couldn’t.
Good for you refusing to take ill health lying down!

So glad to see you back. Hope your health will continue to improve. The good weather is on it’s way and I always think that makes a big difference.
I trained (and qualified) as a nurse but I turn to alternative therapies as much as the NHS these days. I don’t mind where the cure comes from and I know that many of these therapies have been around for a lot longer than the NHS. Doctors can’t treat all illnesses.

Gemma—so glad to hear your feeling better.I always try to find the solution on my own before knocking on the doctors door.Just the money I save makes me feel better. My daughter(geekxnerd)and I both follow your blog and I consider you a ray of sunshine.

    Hi Gemma:
So glad to hear you are on the mend! Just wondering if your problems are sinus related? I have been suffering, like you since Oct/Nov and just wondering if that is your malady as well? Would love to hear what is helping you.
    Thanks so much,

Glad to hear you are on the mend, winter is such a miserable time. After seeing your fab cushion a few posts ago, I was inspired. Booked a place on a knitting workshop in Liberty and have now discovered the mystic secret to knitting in colour!

Nice to see you back and sorry to hear you’ve had such a miserable time. Hopefully once you get a bit of sunshine it will help too, but at least you’re doing something positive and sounds like the Homoeopathy might give you some relief. Onwards and upwards!

Pleased to hear that it is working for you. We don’t see the GP either, except in cases of emergency of course, which quite frankly have been due to accident not ill health. I’d recommend some extra vitamins (yes I know they say they don’t work but I believe differently), a short course of echinea (however you spell it) to build up your immune system, and if you’ve been taking loads of anti-biotics some acidopholous (gosh I wish I could spell) to restore the beneficial bacteria. Plus the homeopath. There that’s Dr Carolyn’s prescription!

Oh, my. I was complaining that you were out for a long time and here are you posting and I didn’t know it. I was away from the computor for some days.
About immune systems: some two years ago I had a cold almost every week for some time. I bought some immune system booster in a herbalist and now I just have a cold once is a while.
Sometimes these natural treatments are the best.

I was just saying to my husband last night that I don’t feel awful but I don’t feel “good” either. I want to feel good and like I have energy again. It feels like we have had a low grade virus for a long time and I want it gone. We are going for more healthful eating and some moderate exercise. Hopefully it helps. I love the idea of a homeopath. They are only so/so popular her in the US but I know they exist. I have stayed away from the doctor because I don’t want another antibiotic.
