Why oh why?!?

July 8, 2008

1

Oh I had tales to tell. Tales of sunshine, bbqs, fruit and vegetable picking.

2

Instead I had to buy cherries from the supermarket and as we all know that simply isn’t the same!

Instead we had this!

And then yesterday for a change we had this

This is JULY PEOPLE! Yes July and yet in unseasonal Britain we now have year round rain it seems. G tells me that he swears that he remembers when English Summer was proper Summer. The whack of wood on willow of a cricket match, the buzzing of bumble bees in the daisies on the grass, the scent of an over enthusiastic Dad burning sausages over fire in the garden next door because he has drunk too much beer watching Wimbledon. Being an expat kid I didn’t have these experiences. Well the burnt raw sausages I did but that is a post for another day.

Apparently there is yet more of this to come. Remember also, that I don’t drive, so I walk in this. I walk in this in unsuitable footwear and my leaky raincoat and I get drenched. I also get splashed by inconsiderate drivers who think it is oh so funny to drive at full speed through the five big lakes on the road up to my work. I swear. Lots. Then I get to work and get changed. Did I mention that the temperature has failed to drop much? My favourite combination of all time, rain and heat. I’m as fragrant as a daisy when I get home and a pleasure to spend time with just ask G!

Two weeks and a handful of days till Spain and two weeks holiday. That is my mantra, I repeat it over and over as I slog through the rain. (Interrupted by swearing at cars obviously.)

I feel your pain but oh the light in the last photo is amazing. Your cloudy England gives such great lighting. Think of that as a positive!

  2. July 8, 2008 10:59 pm

Ah, but it does make for beautiful photos.

Goodness me… I live in the Pacific Northwest of the USA. We get lots of rain too, and you have my sympathies.

It has been awfully wet these past 2 summers but actually I don’t mind I rather like the rain gives me an excuse to wear my fav footware – Hunters. I know boring and oh so country but boy are they comfy.

Oh dear. Hopefully at the end of this rain there will be scads of sunshine and flowers. Sending good vibes your way!

All this rain is very disheartening. I don’t drive either so can totally sympathise with the wet shoes and being splashed by drivers
    April xx

If it didn’t rain all summer there wouldn’t be any green – it’s just the price we have to pay. Not that I like it, mind you…

You’ve gotta love the British ‘summer’ haven’t you! For goodness sake get yourself a proper raincoat and some nice wellies – I agree with Carolyn, Hunters are fab! Make sure you get them a size too big so you can wear handknitted socks inside them!

I do sympathise about the weather, don’t think I don’t – we have had enough summers like the one you are describing. Just let the weather do it’s own thing (you know it will anyway) and keep repeating that mantra. But try to stay dry – it’s not fun to start your holiday with a cold! A pair of nice wellies might help, how about these: http://www.twenga.co.uk/offer/0121887000.html ? I know I would look at my feet and smile if I were wearing them!

I always think of rain in Britain as very romantic, but I guess if you live there, it might get a bit trying.
    Your photos are beautiful!

    Hang in there!

I live in Brittany (yep down there !) and whatever temperature there may be, I’m sooooooo tired of the wet weather…… however your pictures of the raindrops are beautiful !

  14. July 11, 2008 10:44 am

Never mind. The rain is always so nice.
Today is raining a little bit here too, in this (too much) sunny Portugal.

  15. July 11, 2008 10:50 am

I don’t mind the rain. It gives me an excuse not to go outside and survey the mess that we used to call the garden!

  16. July 11, 2008 12:20 pm

Oh, I’m with you gemma – sick and tired of it, though your last photo is just gorgeous; actually, all your photos are just lovely xx

  17. July 11, 2008 2:53 pm

My parents are living in London now and are depressed at the weather. Especially when they call home and find out I have just got back from the beach! And am sooo tanned! Poor Mum and Dad… Poor Gemma… Stupid rain!

  18. July 12, 2008 1:19 am

Oh Gemma, your post made me laugh! I actually think I’m laughing “with” you, so don’t worry. It’s sunny here….but I can understand your feelings. It rains a lot where I am, too. I’m a walker as well – so I can sympathize muchly with that. Keep looking forward to Spain!!! That sounds LOVELY! Have a fantastic weekend. Wishing you some sunshine!

I used to live in the Pacific NW but finally moved to southern Oregon where it is lovely and sunny everyday and HOT–100 degrees today. It is heaven. I have however spent many summers in England where it rained everyday and we never dried out. I wish I could portkey you here for a couple of days a week–for the cherries and sandals and ice lollies on the porch at 11 pm.

I’m so sorry you’re water-logged… but the rain does make for beautiful photos! Wish I could send you some of our summer… we’re baking here.
