The Labyrinth

November 27, 2009

Oh folks it has been a hellish time, one that I am not completely over but I have decided that I am powering through and ignoring the symptoms in an attempt to keep going. I've been suffering with labyrinthitis something I can only describe as 24/7 motion sickness which is not the most pleasant of things I can tell you.

Now that I am over the pretty much constant nausea, which involved me vomiting every hour on the hour things are much improved and if I can just stop the room spinning for more than five minutes at a time I will be an ecstatic little bunny. The fact that this arrived whilst we were in Wales celebrating my Mother in Law's birthday was just the icing on the cake. Being ill when you aren't in your own home is always unpleasant. But being ill when you have a minimum four hour car journey to get you home when suffering from motion sickness on steroids isn't something I would wish on my worst enemy.

Luckily the injection that they gave me at the hospital seemed to knock me out for the entire journey. Ahhh yes there was an emergency department visit! One that I insisted on after six hours of vomiting and spinning when I started to panic that maybe I had a brain tumour! They were lovely though, the nurse was fantastic the fact that she was called Gemma and her boyfriend had the same name as G just made me warm to her even more. Of course the fact that they were giving me drugs and telling me I didn't have a brain tumour just added to the little love fest that we had going on!

So in conclusion, I am back, ..ish. My priority at the moment is to get back to my temp job on Monday so they don't decide they can cope without me and to get back on the scales at group on Wednesday so that they I can make the most of not eating for four days straight!

Oh my God, my brother in law had that over the summer. I’ve never seen him knocked so low for a couple of weeks – it was awful to witness and so much worse for him to experience. I really hope you’re feeling much better very soon – he’s now fine again and fingers crossed it was a one off. They were worried about tumours too – well, you would, wouldn’t you? Glad for both of you that it’s not anything so sinister.

I am a fellow labrynthisis sufferer. I’ve found that keeping meclyzine hcl on hand (otc as dramamine II) helps. I take it at the first sign of dizziness and it makes the bout shorter. I’m sorry you felt so bad. It’s a nasty way to feel. And I never know when it’ll pop up. I’ve had it most of my life. I’ve learned that sometimes you just have to give in to it.

Oh you poor thing! I hope you’re better soon. My sister had the same thing some years ago, and was getting motion sickness even from lying in bed. Thankfully it didn’t take too long for her to get better. I hope the same for you!

I had this a few months ago and it is vile. My doctor told me that if you don’t take medication it will go away in about 8 weeks. I couldn’t cope with feeling like that for 8 weeks!!
You have my sympathy and good wishes.

I have a friend who had it too – it’s nasty. Poor you.
But as you say, 4 days of vomiting has to be good for the old poundage. Every cloud…

Oh my…I do feel for you! I suffered from something similar once; they called it Vertigo. (Perhaps it’s the same thing?) I was told it was a virus that would pass with time, and luckily it did. A drug called “Antivert” did the trick for me; same as over the counter Dramamine II. I hope you will feel better soon!
